We’ve been in Central Missouri for the last few days, just hanging out before my Grandma’s funeral next week. One of the big highlights for me has been bird watching. I never really considered myself to be much of a bird watcher, but I have been fascinated watching them this weekend.
Central Missouri was bombarded with snow the last couple of weeks – 24″ total at my parents’ house! My dad has huge bags of bird seed and we’ve been feeding the birds several times a day just outside their back door. I am amazed at the birds I’ve seen – cardinals, blue jays, gold finches, purple finches, red wing black birds, starlings, a red headed woodpecker, one pigeon, and a bunch more I haven’t identified yet. It’s so funny watching the birds hop about, fly away when they get startled, and come back when they think it’s safe.
Of course, I’ve also been taking pictures. The light is terrible which makes it difficult, but I think I’ve finally got a few good shots.
Here are my favorites:
Mr. White Crowned Sparrow
Mr. Gold Finch {I think}
Mr. Blue Jay
Mr. Cardinal
Mr. Cardinal
Are you a bird watcher? What’s been the favorite bird you’ve seen out and about? I highly recommend feeding your birds to see what you get! It’s been a lot of fun and very healing in a troubling time.

Our seven bird feeders have been full the last few days. It is fun to watch them. I like your pictures.
Thanks, Judy. We definitely have to get some bird feeders at our home in Iowa! I never knew it could be so entertaining watching birds!
Great pics! Rhiannon loves the sandhill cranes. We had wild turkeys strutting through the backyard recently. I like watching herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, pelicans and osprey. We have an occasional blue jay or red cardinal in the backyard, sometimes a woodpecker.
Michelle – your pictures are gorgeous! I’m so glad to see you doing some stress relieving activities.
We feed our birds here in northeast Iowa daily. We love watching them. Cardinals, Bluejays, woodpeckers, finches and more. We have atleast 5 bluejays waiting for us to feed the in the morning. They love the peanuts!
We have a Japanese Plum tree right outside our family room windows so we get a TON of birds helping themselves to the sweet fruit! The kids love cardinals, it is the schools mascot after all, but I love to watch hummingbirds. If you set up your feeders early enough you will get 20 that make home round your yard! You can spend all day watching them fight over the feeders. They are funny little buggers!
