Garden Update ~ 7/17 ~ Hidden Dangers

My garden is going strong! We seem to be in a little bubble right here in Eastern Iowa. It’s dry, but the severe drought that is plaguing other areas of the country hasn’t destroyed the crops out here, yet. I’m watering to keep my garden alive and it looks great.


I harvested 9 beautiful heads of broccoli last week and turned them into 10 freezer meals for a meal exchange which I will blog about later in the week! Enough yellow squash to make me ill, and the kale will. not. die. I pick it – it looks like it wasn’t touched!! I can’t believe how much kale we have. Remind me not to plant so stinking much kale next year! 😉 We’ve also harvested quite a few gorgeous carrots, beets that I have no idea what to do with, a few zucchini, a handful of green beans, and a few tomatoes so far. I love this time of year when I can fix a wonderful plate of food and know that majority if it was locally produced {and by little ole me even!}

blankBut there a couple of dangers out at my garden which make me cringe! The first is the sun. I’m a freckled strawberry blonde and I’ve had my share of serious sun burns. The thought of skin cancer makes my skin crawl but I’m also concerned about the chemicals in the sun screen. I try to wear long clothes and hats to keep the sun off my skin, seek out natural sun screen options, and can’t wait until we live out there next to my garden so I can get up and work first thing in the morning. Right now that’s just not possible with my 4 kiddos…

And the second danger is one I never really thought of before: the tall farmer’s corn. The corn grew taller than me seemly overnight. Look at it compared to my two year old!

blankI never really thought of gardening as dangerous, but the farmer’s corn really scares me. Yup. The corn. I grew up in the city so I never had to think about these things, but my hubs grew up right here. He’s well aware of kids being lost in cornfields. I didn’t think about it too much until just a couple weeks ago, when the two year old made a dash for the corn field which is taller than I am!

blankIf you look at this picture, you might understand why I freaked out a bit. That red barn is ours. My garden is to the left of it. And everything in between: CORN. Can you imagine if a child wandered in there and got lost in 100+ degree heat? I shudder just thinking about it. We had a pretty stern discussion about entering corn and I keep an eagle eye on my two year old when we’re working out at the garden. Giving her something to occupy herself helps and the other, older kids are all on the look-out too. Still, I’m wishing for a clothes line or something to tie her to some days! I’ll be glad next year when short beans are growing there instead of tall corn.

    We have raised beds for most of our gardens, so there really are no hidden dangers. Stinging insects are probably the worst of it. We have a small plot of sweet corn with beans and squash intermingled (Three Sisters planting) and we need to be careful not to get sliced by the corn’s leaves when we walk in to water, but again, that’s minor. We see an occasional snake or two (or would, if it wasn’t so darn hot), but they are small and are not really dangerous. They just give us a start when we see them.

    Yikes – I never would have thought about the corn either! I am still kind of cringing just thinking about a little one heading into the field! Maybe you need a herding dog to keep your kids corralled. 😛

    My dad makes pickled beets and cans them. I’m sure you can find some recipes in the Ball canning book on what to do with them.

    I’ve always loved to get myself lost in a cornfield–but I’d freak if I had a two year old. Right now the resident garter snake is scaring the bejeebers out of me every time he/she pops up!

    I’m glad you have enough moisture. All we’ve heard about this week is the drought. My sweetie is working in Europe right now and many farmers there have zero irrigation and are losing their crops due to dry weather too. I guess it’s all over.

    Your garden looks great! We boil or roast the beets…so delicious! If we have lots of beets we make canned pickled beets. I love roasted beets cut into bite size pieces with a little blue cheese, toasted walnuts, salt, pepper and evoo. I also have a recipe with preserved lemons and chives…yum!

    We used to play games in the corn field. Each child had a whistle and who ever was “it” would blow the whistle and the others would find that person. You could give each child a whistle and tell them if they get lost in the corn to blow the whistle.
