Want happy kids? Serve ice cream for breakfast!! I wouldn’t normally do something so crazy, but yesterday, we decided to celebrate the end of summer with something a little outside the box. Summer’s not over yet, and we’re still having some wonderfully warm days here in Eastern Iowa. We turned breakfast into a delicious homeschool challenge – how to make the perfect ice cream cone. Each of my four kids had a different answer, but they all loved their cone the best!
How to Make the Perfect Ice Cream Cone #FinalConeDown
Start with great ice cream. Blue Bunny is a local Iowa company and one of these days, we want to tour their ice cream factory in Le Mars! We had a hard time agreeing on only three varieties, but we ended up with a good mix of premium ice cream, classic ice cream, and also frozen yogurt!
After you’ve agreed on the ice cream comes the fun part – creating! Each of us made our perfect ice cream cones a little differently. My personal favorite: drizzle hot fudge in the cone, add in fresh raspberries and whipped cream, then start layering ice cream and more hot fudge. Top with more fresh berries.
My oldest child prefers to nibble on her cone and then refill. π
And my son prefers to mix his on the slab, in the style of a certain ice cream parlor…
Regardless of technique, we all loved ice cream for breakfast! I highly recommend trying this one day, just to see the expression on your kids’ faces when you tell them ICE CREAM FOR BREAKFAST!
How to Make the Perfect Ice Cream Cone #FinalConeDown

Ingredients
- Blue Bunny Ice Cream
- Waffle cones
- Favorite sauce (Hot Fudge / Caramel Sauce / Homemade Strawberry Syrup)
- Favorite mix-ins (I love berries best. Although my kids did beg for gummy worms, cookies, and candy, I resisted in favor of healthier options, like berries. :D)
- Homemade whipped cream
Instructions
- Drizzle sauce inside your cone before adding anything else.
- Add a few mix-ins. I also added my whipped cream to the bottom of the cone for a fun twist!
- Then layer ice cream and more sauce and more mix-ins. My kids prefer to mix a bunch of varieties, but I'm pretty boring and prefer just one.
- Top with a couple awesome berries and run outside so you don't dribble all over your mom's nice, new floor.
- Enjoy!

We do cake breakfast on occasion, but hadn’t thought about ice cream. I must give this a try. My favorite cone would be strawberry ice cream with slivered almonds and fresh strawberries
That sounds great, Nicky! π
I would choose a chocolate sugar cone and have mint chocolate chip ice cream with hot fudge, rainbow sprinkles and walnuts.
I like the waffle patterned sugar cones. My favorite is the banana split variety, and I would dip it in crushed peanuts.
I don’t think I’ve ever had ice cream for breakfast, but I have had some cheesecake before and it was amazing! One of my husband’s fondest memory of his grandmother was when she gave him chocolate cake for breakfast once. What a fun idea!
I’ve never had ice cream for breakfast, but I think it’s an excellent idea. Count me in!
Look at those faces! Seems like ice cream for breakfast was a big hit!
What a great idea to drizzle chocolate in the cone! Chocolate and raspberries is so delicious!
Coconut and chocolate
We’ve done ice-cream for dinner but never ice-cream for breakfast, my kids would love it!
I don’t eat a lot of ice cream but if I did have some I think it would need to have loads of fresh fruit with it.
Ice cream is definitely a treat we like to have occasionally. Of course, chocolate is the best π
Blue Bunny is one of my favorite brands! So creamy and delicious. I tend to gravitate towards chocolatey flavors, but I never turned down any type of ice cream π
You know looking at this, it really does look like my perfect ice cream cone lol…Now If I only had one.
I would have chocolate malted ice cream with crushed malt balls on top for extra crunch.
Looks delicious! And we have never been on the tour at Blue Bunny but last year we did visit LeMars during Ice Cream Days and went to the Ice Cream Parlor and Museum!
I think ice cream for breakfast is a GREAT idea…in fact, I might do it for my kids tomorrow. I’m on my own with them all week and we have a ton of ice cream to eat. I love the idea of putting the syrup into the cone first…I never thought of that before. Awesome idea!
Looks like you have this down to a science. The most delicious science! So fantastic!
Yum! We love Blue Bell ice cream and i love the fresh berries on the cone idea!
You did eat the ice cream on waffle cones…so that should qualify as breakfast just for that! : )
Lol! There’s dairy, and fruit, and waffles! Perfect breakfast!! π
Oh I would have to say my perfect cone would be one dipped in chocolate with vanilla and caramel inside!!!
I love their strawberry cheesecake…straight up!!

My favorite ice cream is pumpkin (add pumpkin puree to vanilla) or vanilla with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Mmm!
