Spice Cabinet Clean Out

My goals from last week were to clean and organize my spice cupboard and my pantry closet which I did today. Behold:

Old, dirty, unorganized spice cupboard:

Here’s what I did:

1. Empty spice cupboard and wash:

2. Wash the Rubbermaid turntables:

3. Purge items with ingredients we no longer eat (artificial dyes, MSG). Combine spices for which I found more than one bottle:

4. Reorganize cupboard (alphabetically). Made labels for the big spice bottles I have to place on their sides and could never tell what was what. Now I have a nice, clean, organized spice cupboard:

I also wanted to use up some more of the food in my freezer – I used all of the egg roll wrappers by making a huge batch of egg rolls. I had hoped to have extra for the freezer, but someone ate them for breakfast (ahem) and lunch today – so out of the huge batch I made, I only have 4 left. Guess they were good.

My list is growing for things I will need to replenish once this challenge is over. I am out of oil. In fact, I had none for the bread I baked today so I improvised and used apple sauce. And it worked! The bread’s delicious – and this is a great way to use up apple sauce since I normally find half a moldy jar in the back of the fridge. Gonna have to remember that.

I also cleaned out my pantry cupboards. I’m embarrassed to show you this picture because it seems somewhat weird to have this combo in the bathroom. We live in a pretty small house right now and the previous owners made good use of all available space. While I dislike the location and look of these cupboards, they are pretty functional.

I’d love to make these cupboards prettier, but my husband won’t let me paint them. Spoil sport. Any ideas?

And that’s my week. Have you done any cleaning/organizing lately? And now I am off to find the rest of the house because it’s in dire shape…

Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Woo hoo! I am very impressed - your spice cupboard looks great! Mine could use a cleanup/cleanout too... you've inspired me to add this task to my list. Granted, it's not at the top of the list, but at least it is on the list. :-) I'm thinkin' you need to coerce DH into painting the pantry cupboards. Maybe let your kids paint them first, then he'll have to "fix" them - haha!
  2. Your spice cupboard looks great! Love that you wrote labels on the big jars. I actually do this too. I have all my small Tone's spices in a plastic bin and wrote on the tops so that way I can pull out the bin and find what I am looking for quickly. Works great! My decluttering came to a stand still this past week. Hoping to hop back on the train this week and start in the bathrooms. Not really looking forward to those rooms but it will be good to have it done. So far I have the kitchen and dining rooms done and I love having a fresh, clean uncluttered area. Just wish it would stay that way!
  3. I did this a week ago! :) do you know, I had SIX bottles of cinnamon? what the heck. 3 were pretty old, so I combined those and am saving that old cinnamon for making cinnamon dough that the kid and I will press into my pampered chef heart molds, for decorations. :) as for those cupboards, if hubby really refuses to let you paint, how about decor vinyl? the craft shops have it in different designs, your you can buy sheets of it and cut it (I cut mine on my cricut cutting machine) and I think that you can also buy printable vinyl. It peels off when you don't want it there anymore. it's the stuff that they make words for walls out of.
  4. I would want to paint those cupboards myself too though... it would make the bathroom "feel" cleaner. tell him your blog friends vote for painting! :)
  5. I have been paging through your blog, and saw this post and had to comment. We've lived in our share of odd apartments (luckily all had pantry space) but we've had some other interesting storage solutions. As for the cabinets, if they are solid wood, would a sanding and a new (less dated) finish be ok with the hubs? If not, how about just updating the hardware to something more modern?
    • Something will happen to then one of these days. It's low on the list, though. Unless I get crazy when he happens to be away on business or something... ;-)
