German Frikadellen Recipe with Pan Fried Potatoes

Hi there! I’m Nicky from Little Family Adventure and I’m excited to share one of our family recipes with you. German Frikadellen are one of the most popular meat dishes in Germany. They are flat, pan fried, hamburger steaks often served with skillet potatoes or potato salad. Some say they are the grandfather to the American burger and fries. It makes for a quick weeknight meal or delicious snack.

In our family, we are always on the go and need healthy meals that can be cooked quickly. This Frikadellen and Potatoes is one of those meals. It can be cooked up and ready to eat in about 20 minutes. It also makes a great freezer meal. You can prep the patties beforehand and pop them in the freezer. Remove the patties you need and allow them to defrost overnight in the refrigerator. It couldn’t be simpler.

German Frikadellen Recipe

Growing up in a Dutch/German family, I grew up eating dishes like this Frikadellen all the time. Two of my favorite ways to serve this is with a side of German mustard or topped with curry ketchup, mayonnaise, and chopped onions. Create your own curry ketchup by combining 3 Tablespoons of ketchup with ¼ teaspoon of curry powder.

Give this recipe and try and you may never go back to the traditional burger and fries ever again.

German Frikadellen Recipe with Pan Fried Potatoes

Traditional German fried hamburger recipe

Prep Time 5 minutes

  • German Frikadellen and Potatoes
  • Serves 4
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 15 minutes
  • 1 lb Ground Beef, pork, or combination of the two
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 Tablespoon onion powder
  • ½ cup Panko bread crumbs
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Pinch of nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2 russet potatoes, peeled and sliced ½” thick


Put potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes. Drain potatoes in a colander and set aside.

In a medium bowl, mix all ingredients, except butter and potatoes, together until well combined. Shape into 8 - 1/2 inch thick patties.

In a large skillet, add 1 Tablespoon butter and bring to medium heat. Cook patties 4-5 minutes per side until browned on both sides. Remove from pan and keep warm.

Add remaining butter and potatoes to skillet. Over medium heat, cook for 5-7 minutes or until potatoes are crisp and browned.


Michelle's note: I am very excited to try this recipe as I used to eat Frikadellen when I was a girl in Germany. They were a favorite of my German friends' mothers to take along on picnics!

I first got the inspiration for Parmesan Garlic Chicken in one of my favorite cookbooks Don’t Panic–More Dinner’s in the Freezer: A Second Helping of Tasty Meals You Can Make Aheadblank. I really like this cookbook not only because there are very tasty, freezer friendly recipes included in it, but it also calculates the amounts necessary if you were to make the recipe time x3, x6, or x9 for freezer meals.

My basic math skills aren’t too shabby, but having the figures pre-calculated for tripling a recipe is really handy. That’s my plug for the cookbook Don’t Panic–More Dinner’s in the Freezer if you’re into freezer cooking!

Regardless of if you like freezer meals, you need to serve up this parmesan garlic chicken for dinner tonight! It’s a huge hit with both kids and adults. It’s so easy to make – yet looks fancier than it is. And it’s sure to be a hit at any family meal or dinner party. If you’re looking for an easy recipe that freezes well and tastes just as good after it’s frozen, I highly recommend this easy and delicious parmesan garlic chicken.

Quick, Easy & Freezer Friendly Parmesan Garlic Chicken

Let’s get busy!

blankFirst, prepare to cook by putting olive oil in one bowl and cheese, seasonings, and garlic in another. Dredge the chicken through the olive oil first and then through the cheese mixture.
A quick and easy freezer friendly recipe for parmesan garlic chicken. Make one batch for dinner and another batch to freeze.Arrange chicken on a baking pan.
Bake chicken for 40-60 minutes, until cooked through an no longer pink. The internal temperature of the chicken should be 165 degrees to be properly cooked.

Parmesan Garlic Chicken

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 45 minutes
Total Time 1 hour


  • 6 bonesless, skinless chicken breasts. I also use thigh fillets sometimes and honestly like them better.
  • 1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese. Pecorino Romano is delicious in this recipe, as is Asiago. Get crazy and use the cheese you like best!
  • 1 1/2 tbs Italian seasoning
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup olive oil


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Mix the cheese, Italian seasonsing, and garlic in one shallow bowl.
  3. Put the olive oil in another shallow bowl.
  4. Dredge the chicken pieces in the oil, then cover with the cheese mix.
  5. Arrange the chicken pieces on a pan and bake in preheated, 40-60 minutes for fatter chicken breasts, and 30-40 minutes for thinner pieces.
  6. Enjoy!

Freeze a Batch for Another Day

To make an extra batch for the freezer, follow the recipe but don’t bake. Instead, place each piece of dredged chicken on a piece of parchment paper and flash freeze. Then remove to a freezer container and freeze! The day before you’d like to cook it, thaw overnight in the fridge and then cook for the recommended amount of time, or bake it frozen, but add at least 20 minutes to your baking time.

I’ve been giving my crockpot a workout the last couple of weeks. It’s helping me a lot to get dinner on the table at an earlier time.
