We spent several days of last week in Central Missouri helping with my ailing grandpa and my dad’s garden.  While my garden in Eastern Iowa needs rain, Central Missouri is just consumed by it, with high humidity, lots of storms, and flood warnings. Normally my dad gripes most of the summer about lack of rain, but that is NOT the case so far this year! Check out the fabulous sights in his garden – beautiful cabbage, broccoli, flowering potatoes, flowering squash, more strawberries than you can imagine, and so much lettuce, kale and chard!

I was simply amazed at my dad’s garden. first by the mud, and then by the bounty. I had to leave my shoes at the fence and go barefoot since I failed to pack my mud boots. It was a little nasty being barefoot in the mud at first, but then I thought it was kind of fun – acting like a kid again. While I’ve been picking lettuce, strawberries, and spinach at home, my dad is practically swimming in those things.

I can’t believe that he’s already harvested the main heads of his broccoli and the heirloom tomatoes I started from seed and gave him are at least triple the size of the same varieties I have in my garden. I picked strawberries out of his huge patch for three days and canned some delicious strawberry syrup – perfect for pancakes, waffles, ice cream and more.  And I also headed home with delicious asparagus, kale, lettuce, and enormous broccoli side shoots. I’m so happy about that.

On tap for me this week is finally making my tomato cages. That must get done! I still haven’t spent the time I to spend in my berry patch, so hopefully that will happen too. Now, let’s get the Tuesday Garden Party started by showing you some of the posts I enjoyed most from last week.
