Using Loss Leaders to Save at Walmart

Did you know you can price match at Walmart? You can. It can be a great way to save money – especially in my area where there are no double coupons and my grocery shopping choices are Walmart, Aldi, HyVee, or Fareway unless I go to the Quad Cities.

Walmart’s policy is to price match to stores in your local area. What that means is up for interpretation, but Walmart in Muscatine will price match to Quad City stores including Target and Jewel-Osco, to the local grocery stores including HyVee and Fareway, and to the drug stores, Walgreens & CVS. You can read Walmart’s price matching policy here if you are curious about the specifics.

I have also read that Walmart will accept competitor’s coupons. I have not tried that yet, so I don’t know how it will work, but if in fact they do, that could make for some very nice deals. Target, especially, often has store coupons that can be paired with manufacturer’s coupons to make for inexpensive groceries. If you have tried to use a competitor’s coupon at Walmart, let me know how it worked!

Here is an example on using loss leaders to save at Walmart. Remember my post on the good deals for Eastern Iowa? It’s here if you would like to review it. I printed out that list and took it to Walmart with me over the weekend to do a little reconnaissance work. I wanted to double check that the prices were lower than Walmart prices (THEY WERE!!), and I used it to price match when I checked out.

  1. I price matched and used vender coupons this last week at Wal-Mart. I can't share the $ amount because I haven't figured it out. I know the % saved was probably higher for me. One word of advise...warn the people behind you line that you will be price matching or they might be getting cranky!
  2. I've always price matched sales ads at Walmart (since I moved out at 18). Saves me gas & time traveling to several different stores that are having good sales on select items.
Any Target store I'd ever been to DID NOT price match other ads... but ours here in VA recently started doing it. I have to bring the ad in and bring the select items UP TO CUSTOMER SERVICE, which is kind of a pain, but still worth it. I prefer shopping Target anyday, as there's rarely lines, the receipts are easy to read, returns are super easy and the merchandise is great. On a seperate note... I've never experienced a store honoring military Commissary ads.

    Happy Shopping.-- Beth

  4. I went through coupons and sale flyers last night and came up with a bunch of questions! including will walmart or hyvee accept competitors coupons (Kmart had a good coupon for crystal light and my hubby drinks that).

This is great info. I know hyvee sale flyer comes out on weds, does fareway flyer come out then too?
  5. Hy-Vee will not. Walmart, may. Grocery store ads come out on Wed. and drug store on Sundays. Wed & Sundays are the days to watch out for.
  6. I'm as cheap as they come but I'll go to Hy-Vee even for the loss leaders. Hy-Vee does a ton of community "good" in my city and I know our Walmart, generally, does not.
  7. Anon - I'm curios which city you are in and specifically what community good Hy-Vee does. I'm no Walmart proponent by any means, as I normally don't shop there, but I can't think off the top of my head something good for the community that either store has done.
  8. Ok - I take the back. I did just think of something. Hy-Vee sponsored a class my kids took and really enjoyed at the library! Yay! I can't think of anything Walmart has done, though.
