The Iowa 80 Truck Stop in Walcott, Iowa. I-80 Exit 284, is billed as the world’s largest truck stop. I think it’s one of the most interesting places to stop along the entire interstate. The complex includes numerous restaurants, a free trucking museum, movie theater, barber shop, dentist, dog park. It even has its own annual festival every July – The Truckers Jamboree, that draws tens of thousands of people.

Iowa 80 Truck Stop More Than a Fill-Up in Walcott, Iowa

We drove past it plenty of times before we finally pulled off to check it all out. It’s not a quick in-and-out. It’s always busy and the parking lot reflects that. But, we always stop there with out-of-town guests, and it never disappoints. If you’ve been driving past the signs for years, you’ve been missing.

Here’s what to know before you go!

What Is the Iowa 80 Truck Stop?

The Iowa 80 Truck Stop sits on the north side of I-80 at Exit 284 in Walcott, Iowa — about 20 miles west of the Quad Cities. It’s been the world’s largest truck stop for decades and runs 24 hours a day.

Most people expect a big version of a standard truck stop. What you actually find is something closer to a small town. Inside the main building: a Super Truck Showroom with show-quality rigs on display, a gift store, a movie theater, a barber shop, a chiropractor, a dentist, a dog park and pet wash (the Dogomat), a workout room, private showers, a custom shop, restaurants, and a convenience store. There’s also a Tesla Supercharger here.

When we bring out-of-state visitors here, the dentist and dog park are always the ones that get a reaction.

The collection covers more than a century of American trucking history. On our first visit I found an electric milk truck from the early 1900s that had delivered fresh milk in Chicago, a US mail truck mounted on skis, a wrecker from the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, and wooden peg wheels that make you appreciate rubber tires. Vintage Peterbilts and Kenworths, a Super Truck Showroom, exhibits that move from practical to genuinely strange.

My kids were hooked. Even people who have no particular interest in trucks enjoy this museum. Turns out, the history of American freight turns out to be weirder and more interesting than most people expect.

Plan 45 minutes to an hour, longer if your kids want to linger around the big rigs.

The Walcott Truckers Jamboree at the World's Largest Truck Stop

The Walcott Truckers Jamboree

Every July, the Iowa 80 Truck Stop hosts the Walcott Truckers Jamboree — a three-day event celebrating American trucking that draws tens of thousands of people from across the country. Admission, parking, and concerts are all free.

The 48th Annual Walcott Truckers Jamboree runs July 9–11, 2026, so if you’re traveling this summer, the timing lines up well.

The Jamboree includes a Super Truck Beauty Contest with rigs competing across dozens of categories, an antique truck display, more than 175 exhibits, an Iowa pork chop cookout, live country music each evening, Trucker Olympics, and fireworks. It draws serious truck enthusiasts and curious families in equal measure, and the atmosphere is more festival than trade show.

One of my longtime readers once told me she used to attend through her work and that it was “quite the event to experience.” That tracks – we’ve been a couple of times and we can see the fireworks from our house! If you’re within driving distance in July, it’s worth a stop!

How Long Should You Plan to Spend?

The museum and truck stop together make a solid 1–2 hour stop. Add time if you’re eating a meal or attending the Jamboree. It sits roughly in the eastern third of Iowa’s 306-mile I-80 stretch, so it works well as an early stop heading west or a last stop heading east.
