Why Use Homemade Baking Mixes?

it makes my little heart happy when I can save time and money. It’s even better when I feed my family nourishing foods. Homemade baking mixes do all of the above.

I buy all of my ingredients in bulk rather than small prepackaged mixes. This means I also have total control over the quality and type of ingredients.

Another reason I love homemade baking mixes is that I can customize them. Dietary issues or restrictions? No problem. Vegan? No worries.

Once the baking mixes are made, it’s easy to whip up our favorite pancakes, muffins, cakes, or other baked goods.

How to Store Homemade Mixes

Once you have your mixes made, proper storage will keep them fresh and help them last for a long time. Use airtight containers such as glass jars or bags. It’s essential to keep moisture out of the mixes.

Label each container with the name of the mix, the date it was prepared, and any special instructions. I like to just put the recipe directly on the bag so I don’t have to look it up again.

Most homemade mixes can be stored at room temperature in a cool, dry place for up to six months. However, check the specific recipe for instructions. Mixes that contain whole grains or nuts may need to be refrigerated.

With proper storage, your mixes will be ready to whip into delicious treats whenever you need them.

Ingredients and Supplies for DIY Mixes

While your exact ingredients and supplies will depend on your specific recipe, there are a few things that you’re bound to need. Most of these are probably already in your pantry or kitchen.

  • All Purpose Flour: I prefer using unbleached flour and sometimes mix in a little whole wheat depending on the recipe.
  • Salt: I buy salt in bulk because, let’s face it, it makes everything a little bit better.
  • Baking Powder: Make your baked goods fluffier with high quality baking powder.
  • Sugar: I prefer using raw sugar.
  • Measuring Spoons and Cups: If I’m doing a lot of prep in one day, I prefer to have multiple sets of measuring spoons and cups.
  • Mixing Bowls: I like this set of nesting bowls in a variety of sizes. The large bowls are big enough for mixing and the small bowls are great for prepping ingredients.
  • Jars with Lids: Canning jars are perfect for storing mixes. They also look pretty if you give them as gifts.

  1. I absolutely loved all the choices of Homemade Premixes for a pantry. In this day & age, fixed income, this helps immensely & let me say “taste” better 100%. You can customize the mixes to suit your taste & needs. Really enjoy being able to go in my panty & I can make hot yummy chocolate drinks, sweet pancakes, delicious cookies, cakes, etc., saving time & money & and it all tastes good. Did I say no strange additives, preservatives. Thanks so much for sharing.
